GCSE students in west Suffolk have been praised for their hard work and dedication, as one school revealed it recorded its best results in non-Covid times.
Pupils collected their results from schools in the west of the county on Thursday, with Sybil Andrews Academy in Bury St Edmunds stating it had achieved its "best ever set of results in non-Covid times."
Grade 5 figures for English and maths increased by 10% to 50% at the school, in Rougham Tower Avenue, while the Grade 4 percentage for English and maths increased by 9% to 71%.
Almost one fifth of pupils in the year group averaged a Grade 7 or above.
Kevin Blakey, executive headteacher, said: “I would like to say well done to all pupils and staff for their hard work and to Sybil Andrews parents for their support."
At County High School in Bury St Edmunds, 70% of the 187 students taking GCSEs achieved a grade 4 in English and maths, and 20% of grades were above 7.
Umeno Newland got six Grade 9s and three Grade 8s and an A in additional maths.
Sally Kennedy, headteacher at County High School, said: "I am very proud of our students who have worked hard in their studies as well as contributing so positively to school life and the positive community of our school.
“They have demonstrated our school values of ambition and determination in their examinations."
Meanwhile Breckland School in Brandon said they are "thrilled" with student performance.
Notable mentions include Alex Harris, who got a grade 9 in maths, grade 8 in English and grade 7 in science, Leeia Harrington (Grade 9 History, Grade 7s in English, Maths and Science), Annabel Chandler (Grade 8s in English, History, PE and Grade 7s in Maths and Science) and Evie Bland (Grade 9 Art and Grade 8 English).
Thurston Community College said its 265 students collecting GCSE results have "a lot to celebrate" with strong pass rates.
They said their results are in keeping with the school’s "successful performance in line with previous years."
Special mention went to James Boutell who got twelve Grade 9 grades.
Over 220 students at Samuel Ward Academy in Haverhill collected their results, with 65% achieving Grade 4 or higher in both English and maths.
Top achievers included Gabriella Rundle-Shahzad with six Grade 9s and three Grade 8s and Josh Cijo with six Grade 9s and three Grade 8s.
Dr Kev Geall, Head of School, said: "It's a pleasure and a privilege to see so many students delighted that their hard work has paid off."
Castle Manor Academy in Haverhill said students have achieved "excellent results" and were praised for showing "real resilience" through their studies.
Some 56% of students gained grades 4+ in English and maths.
Piotr Ignaciuk achieved two Grade 9s, two Grade 8s, three Grade 7s and two Grade 6s and will be studying biology, chemistry, maths and physics at St Benedicts Catholic School in Bury St Edmunds.
Meanwhile Shilpa Karumathil will be studying biology, chemistry and psychology at Hills Road after four Grade 8s, four Grade 7s and one grade 6.
At Newmarket Academy, student Beth Ferrie achieved nine Grade 9s and a Grade 8, Jasmine Cook, got seven Grade 9s and three Grade 8s and Julia Michalewska gained eight Grade 9's and two Grade 8's.
The trio will study A-levels in Cambridge, at Hills Road and Long Road sixth form colleges.
Ormiston Sudbury Academy said they are "thrilled" with the GCSE results collected by students.
They said this year’s results show a "very significant increase" in the number of students achieving good passes of grade 5 and above, and top grades of 7 to 9.
Meanwhile at Thomas Gainsborough School in Great Cornard, 267 students were entered in GCSE exams, with 74% getting a grade 4 or above in English and maths.
Helen Yapp, headteacher at Thomas Gainsborough School, said: “We are delighted by our GCSE results this year.
“They are a testament to the hard work and dedication of both the students and the staff. This cohort have risen to the challenges they have faced during their secondary education, and we look forward to their continued success as they start their A-level and college courses."
