A body has been found in the search for a missing 86-year-old man.
Hugh Edgecombe was last seen in Long Melford, near Sudbury, at about 2pm on Wednesday.
A Suffolk police spokesman said today: “Sadly, a body was found in the water between Glemsford and Sudbury this morning.”
No formal identification has yet been made but the search for Mr Edgecombe has been called off and the coroner has been informed.
Mr Edgecombe’s family said they would like to thank the community for their support, especially members of the Suffolk Lowland Search and Rescue
An appeal was launched on Wednesday evening by Suffolk police to find Mr Edgecombe.
On Thursday officers and firefighters focused their searches around the river bank of the River Stour in Liston Lane.
Speaking last week a spokeswoman for Suffolk police said they had been carrying out a number of lines of enquiries to find Mr Edgecombe including tracing his movements on CCTV and doorbell footage.
The spokeswoman added: "Police have been assisted by a helicopter from the National Police Air Service, Suffolk Fire and Rescue and volunteers from Suffolk Lowland Search and Rescue.
“Our searches will be focussed on the River Stour.”
The 86-year-old was last seen wearing a navy-blue jacket, black shorts and black shoes. He was also carrying a walking stick and a yellow shopping bag.
