Plans for nine homes in a village have been refused due to the lack of affordable properties provided. 

Babergh District Council received proposals in March to build on land west of Blacksmith Close in Newton, near Sudbury.

A planning statement lodged with the council stated the plans were for nine homes on the land, including one affordable house.

Eight of the properties would have two bedrooms, while one would comprise of three bedrooms. 

The plans have been refused due to a lack of provision of affordable homes.

"Furthermore, the proposal is primarily for market housing that does not make adequate provision for affordable housing in perpetuity, thereby failing to address a locally identified need to improve affordability in Newton, resulting in social harm," one report said.

However, the planning statement adds: "The proposed development is below the threshold for affordable housing as the site is less than 0.5 hectares and the scheme is less than 10 dwellings."

Concerns were also raised regarding an increase traffic using the junction adjacent to the A134, as well as the harm it would pose on the countryside.
