A Suffolk school has been issued with a major improvements necessary notice after the kitchen was found to have no basin for handwashing.
Rye’s College in Assington, near Sudbury, was rated with a food hygiene rating of one, meaning "major improvement necessary", following an inspection on October 12 last year.
The food hygiene intervention report, provided in response to a Freedom of Information request made by this newspaper, raised four matters requiring attention in the college's kitchen, all of which were legal requirements.
The college, at the former farm site Pump Farm, is operated by the Keys Group and provides education for 11-16 year olds who have spent time out of education with social, emotional and mental health needs.
There was no hand wash basin fitted to the kitchen at the time of the visit, with the report saying it was necessary that a hand wash basin is installed with hot and cold running water within one month.
The report noted no ventilation to the kitchen as doors and windows needed to be kept closed, with inspectors saying the preparation of hot food should be limited until an extract system is installed.
There was also no documented food safety management system available, which the report said must be implemented and staff trained accordingly, and fridge temperatures were slightly high and needed adjusting.
The report also recommended that the kitchen and finishes could benefit from an upgrade.
According to Babergh District Council, the premises were revisited on November 17 and the food management system was now completed.
A temporary Teal unit for washing hands was provided with plans for a new sink in December last year.
There are also plans to relocate the kitchen this year.
Rye’s College was contacted for comment but did not respond.
