A Suffolk butcher who worked in the industry for half a century has once again come out of retirement to help his former business in the lead-up to Christmas.

Mick Boon, who was the owner of what is now called Jamie's Meat Inn in Sudbury for 32 years, has made it his festive tradition to return to the North Street shop to support the team at Christmas.

In 2014, Mr Boon handed the reins over to Jamie Towells - someone he had hired and a colleague he developed a close friendship with - before he retired in 2015.

Mr Boon, who has lived in Glemsford for 41 years, said: "I like to help Jamie at Christmas because it is a very busy time.

"I like to see everyone as well and chat to everyone - I do a lot of chatting."

Mr Boon began his career working at the Co-op in Carr Street, Ipswich, in 1965, and went on to work at Matthew's in Westgate Street before joining Meat Inn in Sudbury.

He is an avid Ipswich Town fan, a proud grandfather and a popular character among Sudbury residents.

A Facebook post put out by Jamie's Meat Inn on Thursday announcing his short return has already received more than 300 likes and over 30 comments and well wishes.

"It's been very good this year, and very busy. It is important to keep traditions like butchers. They are a bit like our pubs, we don't want to lose them," said Mr Boon.

"It was a great industry to be part of and you're never out of work because people have got to eat. It is great to be back here really."

Mr Boon said he has been helping the team to roll up beef, turkey and pork as well as 'drinking a lot of tea'.
