Malcolm Gilham

Published on 17/10/2023

GILHAM MALCOLM Malcolm passed away peacefully at home on Friday 6th October, surrounded by all his children and his partner Shirley, having received wonderful care from the Hadleigh Boxford GP Practice and St Elizabeth's Hospice. He had just turned 89. Malcolm was a much-loved husband to Julia (predeceasing him in 2015). Together they had four children, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Malcolm achieved many things in his life including a successful military career (passing out third from Sandhurst and reaching Lt-Colonel), a festival organiser (creating the Chelmsford Spectaculars in Hylands Park) and as a talented sportsman. He took up squash in his 40s, played at Lexden Racquets Club for many years, and rose to the pinnacle of the sport winning the world championship in Australia in the over-75 bracket in 2009 and again in South Africa in the over-80 section in 2016. He represented England many times in international tournaments. Malcolm was also an active member of Newton Green Golf Club where, until recently, he continued to have lessons every week. He was dedicated in all his sports to being as good as he possibly could be - "you can always improve" was his mantra. Funeral Service to be held at St Edmund King and Martyr Church, Assington on Tuesday 24th October, 2023 at 2.00 p.m. Family Flowers only please but donations to St Elizabeth Hospice C/o Hunnaball of Sudbury, New House, 62a North Street, Sudbury, CO10 1RE 01787 313303 www.hunnaball.co.uk
